| A workshop on Adolescent Behavior |
On December 7, 2011 an interactive session on ‘Adolescent Behaviour and Sex Education’ was held for the students of Classes IX to XII. The workshop was conducted by Dr. M. Rehman, a renowned gynecologist of the city.
| Performance by Bangalore Brothers |
On December 7, 2011, a musical performance was put up for the students of SBGJ by ‘Bangalore Brothers’, a fusion band from Bangalore. Ambarish Kelkar and Vaibhav Kshatriya enthralled the students through their soulful performance and their unique blend of Sufi, Classical and Hip Hop style.
| Nature Trail |
A nature trail was organized by ‘Shrishti’, the Nature Club of the School in association with ‘Kids for Tigers’ in Amchang Wildlife Scantuary on December 10, 2011. The day long trail was led by Shardul S. Bajikar, Deputy Director, Sanctuary Magazine and a well known naturalist. Later in the day, the children also went to Kukurmara to watch river dolphins.
| A Rare Opportunity |
As part of the of the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth Programme (JENESYS), Rahul Adwani of Class XII has just returned from a 9 day visit to Japan. Rahul was selected by the Central Ministry of Human Resource Development on the basis of his scholastic and co – scholastic performance in school. During his stay in Japan , Rahul had the rare opportunity of visiting a high school there and staying with a Japanese family along with other activities. Radul had gone there as a cultural ambassador of India.
| SBGJ's Performance At The East Zone (Cluster-1) Athletics Meet, 2011-201 |
SBGJ made an astounding performance at The East Zone (Cluster-1) Athletics Meet, 2011-2012 and succeeded in securing the first position with 174 points securing 8 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals. SBGJ was followed by South Point School with 90 points and Miles Bronson School at 80 points. The winners would now go to Meerut for the National Meet. The details are –

| Speaking Gandhi-An Interschool Debate,2011 |
The third session of SPEAKING GANDHI – An Interschool Debate was held on November 25 , 2011 with six schools and nine teams participating in the debate. SPEAKING GANDHI – An Interschool Debate, an annual inter school debate was instituted by SBGJ in 2009 with a running trophy for the Champion school. DPS , Guwahati was adjudged the Champion while SBGJ was declared the Runners up.

SBGJ makes it to the Top Four Sarala Birlla Gyan Jyoti, the Regional Winner of Debating Matters India, an Inter School Debate organized by British Council in association with Institute of Ideas, London and Shell Companies in India made it to the top four at the National Level Debates held at New Delhi from November 17 to 19, 2011 after defeating Jamna Bai Narsee School of Mumbai thereby qualifying for the semi finals. However, they lost to Christ Church Junior College of Bengaluru by a narrow margin. The students who represented the school were Rahaul Adwani, Keshav Seth, Yashwi Arya, Akshay Jajodia and Rhea Hussain. Keshav Seth was adjudged as a ‘commendable speaker’ for his individual participation in the entire series of debates.

On November 15, 2011 SBGJ was visited by Deepak Dalal , the author of the Vikram Aditya Adventure series of books. He spent the whole day in the school interacting with the students of Classes VI to IX and the teachers.
| Outstanding Performance |
A six member team of SBGJ was invited to participate in the "Chess For Youth” Championship, 2011 at Kolkata from November 3 to 7, 2011. The team comprised of Abhinav Patwary, Mehul Pasari, Mohit Jain, Trinabh Chokhani, Varun Patwary and Yuvraj Choudhry. The event was organised by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy which is recognised by All India Chess Federation and West Bengal government.
All the players performed brilliantly in the event which attracted more than 600 players from all over India. Mohit Jain of Class VIII was the outstanding performer of the event securing 23rd (joint 14) position in the final ranking list.

Akshay Jajodia of Class XI and Yashwi Arya of Class XII qualified for the National Round of the National Debate Competition organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in observance of Vigilance Awareness Week. The Regional Round of the Debate was held at South Point School on November 2, 2011.

Diwali Mela , The SBGJ Pre Diwali Carnival was celebrated with great fervor on November23, 2011. The day long event which was inaugurated by Avinash Agnihotri, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup Metro District, witnessed a plethora of activities among which the “Ram Leela’ , the symbolic burning of Ravana and the Inter House Folk Dance Competition require special mention.
| Participation in DAIMUN |
A twelve member team participated in the Dhirubhai Ambani International Model United Nations (DAIMUN) organised by Dhirubhai Ambani International School at Mumbai from October 19 to 22, 2011. DAIMUN is a student-run conference that aims to simulate the workings of the real United Nations, bringing together students from all over India and the region, who take on the roles of ambassadors representing different countries. It is an affiliate of The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN), which is the largest and oldest MUN Conference in the world and holds a consultative status as an NGO in the real UN. MUN conferences are increasingly becoming a popular form of public speaking all over the world wherein the students develop a better understanding of various issues in the present world scenario.

Prospectus and registration form for the session 2012-13 would be available at the school office from 10th November 2011 to 10th December 2011 between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on all days (except Sundays & holidays) at a cost of Rs.500/- only.
Forms are available only for Classes Lower Infant, Upper Infant and Class I.
Forms for Classes II – IX would be available in March 2012 subject to the vacancies arising.

| Sarala Birla makes it to the National Final of Debating Matters India |
Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti emerged as the Regional winner defeating Paljor Namgyal Girls School, Gangtok in the Regional Final Round of Debating Matters India held at Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti on September 30, 2011. The SBGJ team comprised of Rahul Adwani , Keshav Seth , Yashwi Arya , Komal Jain , Akshay Jajodia and Rhea Hussain. The team had to go through a number of rounds before qualifying for the final debate.
Prior to the Regional Final, the team had to qualify an online elimination in order to get onto actual debating. The Regional final too had two elimination rounds. The first was the knock out round where Rahul Adwani and Keshav Seth debated against the motion ‘Fertility Tourism in India is exploitative’. They were pitted against Army Public School, Shillong.
On qualifying the knock out round, the team reached the Group Stage round which was held in two phases-
- •Group stage 1 saw Yashwi Arya and Akshay Jajodia debating for the motion ‘The Indian Government is too narrowly focused on GDP growth’ against Don Bosco School, Guwahati in which SBGJ was declared winner.
- •Group stage 2 saw Komal Jain and Rhea Hussain debating with Kendriya Vidyalaya, Halflong against the motion ‘Minority groups in India need special legal protection from communal violence’ in which again SBGJ emerged winner.
The success in the Group stages put SBGJ onto the Final Debate where Keshav Seth and Rahul Adwani spoke against the motion ‘India should legalise voluntary active euthanasia’ while Paljor Namgyal Girls School, Gangtok spoke for the motion. It was very close contest with both the teams trying to convince the house to the best of their ability. Finally, SBGJ succeeded in lifting the Regional Winner Trophy would now be representing the Northeast in the National Final which would be held at Delhi in November.
Debating Matters India is a debate competition organized by British Council for senior secondary school students in India. The Debate comprises of an online elimination test followed by Regional Final wherein twelve schools from each of the eight regions move on to the Regional Finals. This is followed by the National Final where the Regional Winners from the eight regions meet to debate.

On August 6, 2011, Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti had the honour of being visited by the eminent flautist Pandit Ronu Majumdar who captivated the students with his splendid performance on the flute which ended with the Bhajan ‘Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram.
| Teachers Day |
Teachers’ Day was celebrated on August 5, 2011 with great enthusiasm by the students who left no stone unturned to express their gratitude to their mentors. The theme of the day was ‘Retro’ which took the teachers down the memory lane to the glorious Bollywood era of the 70s.
| Assamese Recitation Competition |
In commemoration with Shankardev ‘s Thithi , an Assamese Recitation Competition and an essay writing competition were held in the school on August 29, 2011.The recitation was judged by Dr. Namita Deka and Dr. Saurabh Kr. Bhuyan who were highly appreciative of the high standard of elocution set by the school. The highlights of the even was a ‘Naam’ sung by the students and teachers, A ‘Xattriya Nrittya ‘ put up by the students of the senior school and a ‘Borgeet ‘sung by Kadambari Kashyap of Class XII.

| Sukhomoy Chakrabarty Memorial Tabla Recital Competition |
The Second Sukhomoy Chakrabarty Memorial Tabla Recital Competition was held on August 20, 2011. The Inter School Competition saw the participation of a number of students from various schools across the city. Aditya Ranjan Pathak of SBGJ succeeded in bagging the Sukhomoy Chakrabarty Memorial Running Trophy for the second consecutive year
| ICHR comes to SBGJ |
An unusual exhibition on the Revolt of 1857 was held in the school from August 19 to August 22, 2011 by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). The exhibition which showcased the various facets of the Revolt in the form of photographs, paintings, sketches and documents was inaugurated by Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.
| Independence Day Celebrated |
Independence Day, 2011 was celebrated in the school on August 15 with the Principal, Mrs. A. Goyal unfurling the Tricolour in the presence of teachers, students and the school staff. Later the students participated in the Independence Day Parade at Amingoan.

The Annual Inter –House Patriotic Song Competition was held on August 13, 2011 with all the four houses in the competition with full fervor. While Agni House secured the first prized, Vayu House bagged the second.
| In Solidarity with the Rest of the World – An Unusual Visit to Beijing |
On August 1, 2011 six students of the school accompanied by the Principal and two teachers left for Beijing to attend the 20th Annual International Student Cultural Exchange Conference organized by Operation Smile. The seven day long conference saw representatives from 22 countries participate in it to develop an understanding of international cultures, for building leadership skills, and develop the communication skills of the students who help with the promotion and development of the Operation Smile.
The main highlight of the event was the motivational talks by speakers who spoke about their life’s journey which was full of dedication and determination. The participants took part in the team events of creating banners and chants. An interesting programme of the event was the International Party( I-Party) - a night designated to recognize, appreciate and celebrate the cultures of all the countries representing the conference. Besides the team visited the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Beijing Normal University and the Kung Fu show at Red Theatre which were all an experience of a lifetime!

On August 5, 2011, Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti had the pleasure of hosting the legendary Kathakali exponent Guru Sadanam P. V. Balakrishnan, who along his troupe put up a mesmerizing performance for the students. The Guru who had visited the school as a part of the SPICMACAY programme, demonstrated at length the nuances of Kathakali as a dance form.
| Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Remembered |
A day long programme was organized in the school on the event of the 42nd death anniversary of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, the doyen of Assamese literature and culture. The day began with the singing of “Rabha Sangeet’ and recitation of poems composed by the Kalaguru in the school assembly.
Later , taking a detour from the conventional celebration , the student of the senior school had an inter-action with a young Assamese entrepreneur , Dibyajyoti Hanse. The day ended with Hanse distributing certificates to the participants of the Model United Nations that was held on June 15, 2011.

In keeping with the UN International Year of Youth, a Model United Nations was organised in the school for the first time on June 15 , 2011. The MUN was convened by Mukherjee P. freelance journalist and a Human Rights activist associated with the United Nations.
The five committees that were represented and the topics discussed by each of them were
UNEP - Rights of aboriginals and tribals in respect to their environment and their continuation of stay in forests, National Parks, in their countries.
UNDP - Using small countries as corridors of human trafficking
UNODC- Porous borders between two South Asian countries for syringe trade
UNHCR - Status of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal and India
UN (Women) - Uniform civil code for child sexual abuse especially in beach fronts

June 14, 2011, saw the Investiture Ceremony of the School Cabinet. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. J. Balaji , Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), who gave away the badges to the leaders. The oath was administered by the Principal , Mrs. Anubha Goyal.

On June 11,2011 the school had the honour of being visited by Ma Purnananda from Chinmaya Mission. Ma extensively talked to the teachers on the need to imbibe values onto children to enable them to deal with the complexities of the modern day world.

On June 8, 2011, the school was visited by the violin maestros Dr. Mysore Manjunath and Mysore Nagaraj as a part of a SPICMACAY programme. The two brothers enthralled the students with their hour long recital on the violin.

On June 6, 2011, an installation along with a photography exhibition was put up at Guwahati Artist’s Guild . The exhibition was inaugurated by art critic Mousumi Mousumi Kandali and the famous cartoonist Champak Borbora . The exhibition lasted for a week.
| World Environment Day observed |
On the occasion of World Environment Day, 2011, the students of the senior section put up a street play at various places in Guwahati. Keeping up with the UN International Year of Forests and the WED theme ‘Forests: Nature At Your Service’, the play sought to sensitize people on the need to raise one’s voice against reckless cutting down of trees and the massive destruction of forests. The play was an initiative of the Shrishti club.
| Mid Term Production |
June 4, 2011 saw the students of the school put up their third public theatre production ‘This Gallery Space Is A Urban Jungle' at the play school auditorium. The was the product of a workshop conducted by Mukherjee P. It was accompanied by an installation.
The portrayal was a tribute to the soon-to-commence 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and the 120th birth commemoration of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar.
The play largely constituted of poems by Swami Vivekananda and writings of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar on Gautam Buddha. The portrayal juxtaposed a youth who dared to look into the odds., with the question being raised as to what is political and what is personnel; whether theatre is about a swanky auditorium with powder-puffed actors or if any space can be a theatre space. The installation dealt with the unexplored city within the city, villages within a village, response within responses and most importantly minds within the mind.

On June 4, 2011, the results of the first batch of Class X following the new CCE curriculum was announced by CBSE. Out of 80 students, 6 acquired 10 CGPA while 19 students secure CGPA between 9-9.9
| Poster Making |
In keeping with World Environment Day, Sankalp organised a poster making competition in collaboration with Parijat Academy at Deepor Beel on June 3,2011.
| Theatre Demonstration |
On June 3, 2011, a theatre demonstration was made in the school by Gautam Bajoria, a threatre activist specialising in street plays. Gautam enacted 'Kafan' , a short story written by Munshi Premchand.
| IAYP Workshop |
On May 30,2011, an IAYP workshop was held in the schhol. Primarily an orientation programme, the workshop was conducted by Mr. Debojit Mukherjee. A demonstration on the basics of camping was also made during the workshop.
| Multi Disciplinary Workshop |
A multidisciplinary workshop was organised for the senior students of the school from May 22 to June 9, 2011. The workshop which emphasized on public speaking and dramatics also included photography, stock markets and development of lateral thinking skills. The workshop was led by Mukherjee P. and Gautam Bajoria.

From May 20 to May 27, 2011, some of the students and teachers of the school attended a workshop conducted by the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts. The workshop ended with a dance performance on May 27, 2011
| Participation in the national Kids for Tiger camp |
Radwan Jorjes of Class VIII represented Guwahati as a ‘Tiger Ambassador’ at the National Camp at Pench Tiger Reserve. The three day camp which was organised by Sanctuary Asia as a part of its ‘Kids for Tigers’ programme was led by the well known tiger conservationist Dr. Anish Andheria. The camp lasted from May 6 to May 8, 2011. Radwan was accompanied by the Point Teacher of ‘Kids for Tigers’ Programme in SBGJ, Mawmita Dutta.

On April 30, 2011, the school hosted the first ever tiger fest in the North - East. The fest which was organised by 'Sanctuary Asia' saw eight schools participating in the event. The event was graced by Gautam Narayan, senior wildlife biologist working on the Pygmy Hog Conservation Breeding Programme;Bittu Sahgal, editor of Sanctuary Asia, India's premier wildlife and ecology magazine ;Parbati Barua,the first female mahout and the Chief Elephant Warden of the state of Assam; Bikram Grewal, a renowned ornithologist and author of several best-selling guides to Indian birds, including the latest "A Photographic Guide to the Birds of India" and Banoo Haralu, a renowned journalist from northeast

On April 29, 2011, the SBGJites were taken on a edifying tour to the deserts of Rajasthan when Bhutte Khan Manganiar’s troupe performed in the school.

On April 28, 2011, the school was visited by Dr. Malavika Mitra, a famous Kathak dancer. Apart from a mesmerizing dance recital, Dr. Mitra demonstrated some of the essentials of Kathak and discussed about the evolution of Kathak as a dance form.

On April 27, 2011, the school had the honour of hosting Padmashree Shovna Narayan, the much venerated Kathak dancer. The hour and a half long dance recital by the famous danseuse enthralled the students and left them spell bound. The dance performance was followed by a brief interaction with the students during which she spoke about her work, studies and her student life.
